The Santorini Elegant Tours takes you to the capital of Santorini, Fira (also known as Thera), built on the edge of the west-coast cliff overlooking the caldera. The town combines the beauty of a natural settlement with a vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere, where you can enjoy the scenic walks through the little alleys, shopping in classy souvenir shops and dining in the island’s best restaurants boasting magnificent views.
Fira is one the Santorini’s busiest places but it if you wish you can easily escape from the crowds just by walking the maze of the narrow alleys with hidden chapels and viewpoints. And although at every stop you can enjoy an undisturbed view to the sea and the caldera, the town has to offer much more than its spectacular panoramas and leisure atmosphere. To learn a little about Santorini’s past and its culture we recommend that you visit one of the museums located in the town. The Museum of Prehistoric Thera houses finds from excavations in Akrotiri, a Cycladic Bronze Age settlement associated with the Minoan civilisation. The Archeological Museum of Thera offers an educational trip into the island’s past and its cultural heritage. Very close to Fira, in the village of Kontochori, you will find the Folklore Museum of Emmanuel A. Lignos, located in a cave house. The exhibitions of the museum are dedicated to the way of life in Santorini, its culture and tradition.
As Fira is Santorini’s centre for art and culture you can find on its streets many galleries featuring works by local artists, including wood sculptures, glasswork, paintings, jewellery and ceramics.
An interesting idea could be making a trip down the hill to visit the old port of Fira. There are 587 slippery steps which lead there, and no shade on the way so don’t forget to protect your head and drink plenty of water. At the port you will find few restaurants where you can try fresh sea food. The way back uphill might be a challenge but there is a cable car for your convenience that in no time will take you 220 metres up to the town of Fira.
